We’ve all heard of horror movies, but don’t forget that before the advent of horror movies were horror books. And horror books continue to scare the living daylights out of readers to this day. And while horror books don’t have the visual, gotcha moments with scary music in the background, they do allow for the imagination to run wild, which sometimes can be even more vividly scary than what the big screen can show.
So, if you’re looking to shake things up a bit and add some fear into your life without turning on a screen, consider reading one of the following ten horror books from my recommendation list:
House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski
Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver
Night Film by Marisha Pessi
Ring by Koji Suzuki
Penpal by Dathan Auerbach
Pet Semetary by Stephen King
The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
These are just a few recommendations, but I guarantee any one of them will give you at a minimum a good fright and hopefully a bit of an entertaining, terrifying read!
